RangeCheck is a browser extension that compares the pay range shown on a LinkedIn job posting with U.S. government wage data. It is published by StudyStore.
What the extension reads
The extension loads on www.linkedin.com so it can notice when you open a job, but it does nothing unless the address starts with www.linkedin.com/jobs. There it reads four things from the job you have open: the job title, the company name and the location from the top card of that job, and the pay range from that job's pay element (or, if LinkedIn shows pay elsewhere, a pay-range-shaped piece of text inside that job's detail panel only). It does not read the list of other jobs beside it, other postings' pay, the job description for any other purpose, your messages, profile or any other part of the page, and it runs nowhere outside linkedin.com. The pay range is compared on your device and is never sent anywhere. For Pro users, the offer amount you type into the offer check also stays on your device.
What is sent off your device
- To the RangeCheck wage data service (data-api.premed-toolkit.workers.dev): the normalized job title and seniority level, the state and city, and, for Pro users only, the company name. Every request also carries an application key that is the same for all installs of the extension; it identifies the app, not you. No account, name, email, browsing history or page content is sent, and requests carry no cookies. Pro users only: employer lookups also carry your Pro license key (header X-License-Key). The service checks the key with Polar and keeps only a one-way hash of it, with the result, in a cache for up to 1 hour (10 minutes for a key that is not valid); the key itself is not stored. Free users send no license key. Like any web request, it exposes your IP address to the service, which uses it only for abuse limiting and stores it only as a salted hash (IPv6 addresses by their /64 network). The service does not log request parameters beyond standard short-lived operational logs.
- To Polar (api.polar.sh), only if you enter a Pro license key: the key, with the seller's Polar organization id (not anything about you), to check that it is valid. The extension does this when you activate the key and again about once a week while Pro is active; the RangeCheck wage data service also checks it as described above. Polar is the merchant of record for Pro purchases and handles payment details; RangeCheck never sees your card.
What is stored on your device
Using chrome.storage.local: your license key, whether its last check succeeded (and, if not, why) and when that was, and today's date with a count of free checks used. Nothing else. Removing the extension deletes it.
What we do not do
We do not sell or share data, do not use it for advertising, creditworthiness or lending, and do not run analytics or tracking. The extension contains no remotely hosted code.
